I never thought fishing could be art—until I started playing small-boat angling in Oxnard Bay with the same focus I bring to game design: systems that respond to human rhythm.

At first, I was just throwing numbers at random—‘1’ or ‘2’—like a child chasing waves. But then I noticed: the sea doesn’t care about your bet. It cares about your breath.

I began treating each session like a禅 (zen) ritual. Twenty minutes after work. A cup of coffee. No big catch? Doesn’t matter. What matters is the pause between casts—the silence where you choose.

My design PhD taught me that probability isn’t fate—it’s feedback. The ‘flip bonus’ isn’t magic; it’s the moment you stop chasing and start observing. That’s when the koi appear—not as fish, but as patterns.
